Association of Accredited Auctioneers (AAA):
AAA was formed in 2012 by nineteen of the leading UK auction houses. Now a group of twenty-one, AAA aims to build relationships with Chinese buyers with a view to giving them easy access to their market for Western art and antiques.
With a combined annual turnover of over £200m, the member auction houses each have a reputation for quality and integrity, many over a period of hundreds of years. You can find out about the individual auction houses on our Members page.
Building bridges between West and East
Language barriers, differences in custom and the distance of thousands of miles between the UK and China have traditionally created problems between Chinese buyers and British auction houses. Therefore, AAA has forged commercial links with Epai Live (www.epailive.com), China’s only online live bidding portal. They promote AAA members’ sales directly to more than 100,000 registered buyers. By working with Epai Live, catalogues are published online in Mandarin through the services of Chinese translators based in Beijing.
Payment for purchases has been another problem area for Chinese buyers. An escrow system, operated independently of AAA and Epai Live by Union Pay, provides a secure guaranteed payment system for both the auction houses and buyers. This enables prompt shipping to be organised, and with their banking arrangements, Epai Live are able to facilitate large-scale foreign exchange transactions directly to the auctioneer on behalf of the buyer.
Commitment to high standards and integrity
AAA members are committed to the highest standards of creditability and services to buyers. They provide a platform for Chinese collectors to understand what they can broadly expect from UK auction houses. AAA also carries a code of practice which will be maintained at all times, to ensure confidence in the UK and international auction markets.
